Teaching & Mentorship

Mentorship is an integral part of my practice. Over two consecutive years, I mentored graduating Visual Arts students at the American University in Cairo, guiding each class through the eight-month development of their senior thesis projects — from early research and conceptual framing through to final production — and conceived and curated the two group exhibitions that brought the work together. Kharasana / Construction Site (2024) gathered fourteen young artists around Cairo as a shared backdrop, drawing on the city’s shifting urban fabric — its concrete, its construction sites — as a lens on their generation’s relationship to the place they live. Heels Over Head (2025) brought together eight artists intent on overturning the issues they examine, dissecting and recontextualizing subjects that ranged from personal history to social and political structures. For many of these artists, the shows were a first introduction to Cairo’s contemporary art scene.

My teaching practice extends well beyond these two exhibitions. Between 2018 and 2025 I taught in the Arts department at the American University in Cairo — first as adjunct faculty in the Graphic Design program, then as Associate Professor of Practice in Visual Arts — and I have also taught at Hertfordshire University’s Cairo campus and the Kemet School for Art & Design. Both nationally and internationally, I’ve led masterclasses and individual project-development mentorship programs at the ARD Art Institution in Cairo, Egypt, and the Misk Art Institute and Diriyah Art Futures in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I’ve also led workshops at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar; the École Supérieure d’Art et de Design in Amiens, France; and Aufbau Haus in Berlin, Germany, often guiding participants toward a single collaborative or site-specific work over the course of the workshop. Separately, I designed Visual Expression, an open-source art-education curriculum commissioned by the Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF), and trained the educators who would go on to teach it.
